In The Eyes

Posted by eddie On November - 3 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Its been said many times before that the eyes are the window to the soul, Well maybe but for sure the eyes are the windows to intent yours and your attacker. One of my old aiki ju jitsu teachers told me that you can see when a person has murder in their eyes” he spoke of this man that was attacking him and his eyes where so cold and focused that he would never forget the incident. I thought well this is the Bronx, then one day after working a late night security shifts years later i was attacked and the one thing i remembered before this man made a lunging attack at me was his eyes. He was so focused that it seemed that he was looking through me into my soul, hmmm maybe my teacher was right is there a tell tale in the eyes of the attacker before he or she is ready to strike. I know for a fact that most inexperienced fighters when then are about to launch an attack look directly at where they are about to hit. I also know that when in a group a person is about to swing their eyes roam around trying to find courage and make sure that thier friends are there to bail them out if they get into something that they didn’t expect in the attack. Still is there a correlation between the change of the eyes and and an intention to attack ? Who knows i do know that the eyes give away the subconscious thought in everyday life so why not during an attack?

For everyday ninjas the eyes are just one of the things that can give away your attackers thoughts. So are nervous hand movements giving away their nervous energy. Some people without knowing it show their teeth, like an animal showing their intention to devour their prey. There are a couple of things that one can look at for info on their opponent but here is some tips about the eyes.

Defense

1) first off use their eyes as a focal point and then draw an imaginary triangle starting for their head down to the solar plexus, that way you gan see what they are looking at while at the same time be able to watch their arms and legs with your peripherals

2) glance at what they look at but don’t stare. If you get caught up in their looking you off then they can guide you where they want and then bam they land a punch out of no where, glance and quickly look back at your focal point.

3) don’t get intimidated by their stare look beyond them and focus on everything at once .

Offense

1) look them off , if your gonna hit them in the face look down at their feet and then bam , they will direct their defenses low and Bam you’ve  landed a game changer.

2) look behind them once , this draws their eyes towards your look when they look back and they will … got em (don’t hold your look to long because they could swing at you also, it helps if you say something like here comes the police)

3) watch with a wide perspective see their whole being , that way you can catch them reaching for a weapon or looking for accomplices .

remember the true way of the ninja is to live a life that your enemies never even knows exists, that way they  can t appear in front of you to attack , when you get careless in your awareness , that’s when your physical self defense kicks in never before that. (The crazy man that attacked me that night after work was so focused on his lunge that i was easily able to sidestep leaving a piece of my leg out to trip him, He falls into the street and i ran ran off in the dark.) laughing of course.

EDN: Interview 1 A-Sun Circle Boxing

Posted by eddie On October - 12 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

In our first everyday ninja interview we are going to be talking with A  Sun, a professional boxer and a upincoming   hip hop artist in the Seattle area. As a Everyday ninja he’s developed a form of boxing passed  along from his Grandfather who was a prolific boxer. A sun explains some of the basics of  his style and how it has helped him not on the streets and in the hip hop  biz.

EDN: First off  i would like to thank  A Sun for taking the time to talk with us today on EDN

A SUN: Its my pleasure thanks for having me!

EDN: Ok so without giving up to many secrets, tell us about Circle boxing.

A SUN: circle boxing is broken down into circles and lines, similar to most martial arts styles dealing with movement and angles , or like in our vast universe how planets orbit the sun , orbit being a term i like to use to describe circle boxing basics.

EDN: please explain the orbit concept which i see as the most important part of CB.

A SUN: your center line is always in the same place , but your body on a whole orbits your opponent , to the right or the left giving you infinite targets offense and evasive movements for defense.

EDN: because your always moving ?

A SUN: Cause your always moving and its hard for your opponents for move with you if he doesn’tknow where you are going , especially the targets to the back of the body , spine liver, back of the neck etc.

EDN: Im guess if one got good at the orbiting it would ne really hard to get hit particularly if you were able to switch directions after  two or three attacks .

A SUN: Infinite possibilities . and every time you move which is “constantly” there arise new targets.

EDN : So where did you learn this method of  hand to hand fighting and are you willing to teach your method.

A SUN: I started training in Seattle  WA in the central district in boxing with my grandfathers friend Wille Briscoe Roe, and  looking at different martial arts with my cousins. It was gonna be called 300 meaning in your head you have to use one hundred percent of your brain, as with you body and spirit.  I am open to teach this style to the right people in the wrong hands like anything could be very dangerous.

EDN: What is one thing that stands out about CB

A SUN: No fixed positions being that you are constantly moving , and when a person fix on your postion they cant hit you .

EDN: Thank you so much to our viewers and ASUN for spending his time for our interview, i think that this is an effective method of self defense that is also straight forward with easy to learn basics making it a great addition to what a warrior or everyday ninja might know already.

The Tools of Trade

Posted by eddie On September - 12 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

Before one engages in combat it is wise to know as much information about your adversary as possible.  Sun Tzu states that if a warrior knows himself but not his enemy the warrior is gonna win 50% of the time. If the warrior knows the enemy and not himself than he will also win 50% of the time . If the same warrior doesn’t know himself or the enemy well the outcome is obvious, So we are gonna look at knowing ones self in this article.

Most Human beings have natural weapons provided by god for us in case of combat, of course as i always state our best weapon and the one that should be used first is the mind. Only after the mind was used to access the situation should the ninja go into physical combat. So here is a list of the tools that we have naturally as warriors .

Hands: They can be used for poking, scraping, striking punching and of course grabbing

Elbows: Very good for self defense , hard edges that can deliver  a fairly good amount of damage in the right area i.e the cheek, eyebrow which produces a good amount of blood to blind your enemy , collar bone and sternum , sensitive areas of the skeletal structure that can be broken or fractured . And areas like the thigh and the shoulder blades which are neglected in most combat . Defense , elbows are also a greet means of defense when used at the right time. If an attacker throws a hard punch in the direction of the face your elbow can swiftly rise and block the fist damaging the knuckles of your adversary making them not able to punch again in that way.

Shoulder : ??? yep believe it or not the shoulder can be used to off balance your  unaware adversary being that if they come at you and are met with the shoulder backed up by the weight of your body they can be sent flying. On of the great swords men of history Musashi spoke about knocking his opponent off balance with his shoulder and then cutting through them before they were able to get their balance.

Knees : Like the elbow another hard surface to hit with that can generate a decent amount of power , also very hard to see when up close and surprising when used with a leaping or jumping motion. Note its not always the best idea to bring the knee to the face so one might try bring the enemies face down to the knee “Just ” a though.

Shins: when striking the outside/inside of thigh can be debilitating instantly especially with soccer shin guards to help with the penetration. Shhhh that’s our secret(:

Foot: Used for kicking skills in different methods , the foot to the groin , solar plexus and head is lights out meatball” also shielded with hard shoes I.E dress shoes can be a nightmare in the possession of a skilled kicker

Head: not just used for thinking but also in some cases , delivering a surprising blow to the nose of the adversary in your face asking you if you want to dance. I find that the head butt which should be used with the crown of the head is best served in the middle of thier interview “what you got a prob-BAM ” head butt and they are seeing stars

Later we will discuss some great ways to deploy these tools but that’s for another day.

The Ninja Mind

Posted by eddie On September - 9 - 2009 ADD COMMENTS

a ninjas most valuable weapon is not his sword or gun or fighting ability , a ninjas most valuable weapon is ….his mind. As i stated before when i use the term ninja i am referring the the everyday warrior confronted with opposition and danger around the corner of everyday life. What do you spend most of you time thinking about ? The Key to the ninja mind is to have a sense of vigilance, when you walk into a room look up and then to the left. Pay attention to the details that are in the room. Are things out of place ? Is the room quieter than normal, different temperatures meaning there could be a window or door ajar. Make a habit of counting the exits of any venue that you might frequent , how easy is it for you to get to those exits if need be? What i am getting at is being aware of your surroundings and developing a skill set of observation that will give you the edge on your adversaries. When walking down the street think about what you are doing, put your phone down , turn off your ipod and keep your eyes open. Think as if someone is after you, not living in fear off course  but live with a sense of urgency! Think what if something broke out in the stadium , nightclub convenient store etc the ninja mind is sharper than his sword more swift than any shuriken and more deadly than any martial moves .
